Are your Backups Valid?

From the Desk of Black Bear MSSP

A third of all data loss is caused by backup issues.

Losing access to your business data—even for a short time—can feel like a scene from a horror movie.

Backup tools are designed to create copies of your data and store them securely, while recovery tools help restore that data if something goes wrong. Sounds like a foolproof system, right? Unfortunately, not always.

A recent report reveals that some backup tools aren't as reliable as they should be. In fact, a third of all data losses are due to problems with backups. Many businesses discover their data has been corrupted or lost when they attempt recovery.

But corrupted backups aren't the only risk.

Ransomware is one of the biggest threats businesses face today. This malicious software locks you out of your own data unless you pay a ransom. Shockingly, half of the businesses using backup tools still end up paying ransoms because it’s faster than attempting to recover their data. And even then, only a small fraction of those businesses fully recover their files.

So, if backups are supposed to protect your data, why do they fail so often?

The issue often lies in improper setup and maintenance. Even properly configured systems need regular verification to ensure they're functioning as intended. Additionally, older backup tools may not be equipped to handle today’s more advanced cyber threats.

Setting up and maintaining a reliable backup system is complex, and that's where Black Bear MSSP comes in. We ensure your backup and recovery tools are running smoothly every day, and we can implement advanced safeguards like continuous data protection (CDP), which allows you to restore your data right before an attack or loss.
